Dark Side

~~~
Mitsunari approached Sakon at the coming of sunset. His trusted strategist leaned casually against a mighty tree atop a hill nearby Sawayama. From here, the land looked peaceful and romantic, almost like a dream of what they'd most aspired for.
"Sakon-"
The western commander was not prepared for his retainers response.
He hardly yelped as his back connected harshly with the bark of the tree, and strong hands went for his neck.
Realizing the danger, Mitsunari called out his samurai's name once again. In his state of panic, his voice sounded breathless and hoarse, trembling as he tried to fight off the attack.
And as quickly as it started, it was over. The look in his samurai's eyes had gone from intense and full of fire, he melted and soon they both were crumbling to their knees.
Moments passed before a word was uttered. They sat there. Panting and gasping for air, Mitsunari was still in a state of shock, his hands massaging his neck. He'd anticipated the pain beforehand, and as it never came, a ghostly sensation overcame him. He stared speechless at the man he trusted with his life, whom nearly taken it.
Head dropped and still as a statue before him, Sakon still gave off an unfamiliar air. Mitsunari, never one to feel fear often, was undoubtedly terrified. Mostly, because the one he trusted had done this.
And he was just sitting there! Unmoving. It was unnerving.
"Forgive me..." He nearly sighed in relief.
"Are you alright?"
A scoff, "I nearly choked you, and you're worried about me?"
"I cannot judge a man for acting on instinct. You mistook me for a threat. I know you would never harm me purposefully."
"Tono... you don't know me."
"I'm not used to this, I'll admit, given you're usually so amiable. A man such as yourself really should be more aware of his surroundings. You very well could have killed me."
"Ah..."
Mitsunari rose to his feet, and after dusting off his clothes, stood over Sakon with his arms crossed. "Sakon -"
"I assure you, you will never see that side of me again. In fact, I promise."
Mitsunari was quite taken aback by his samurai's sudden embrace. Not long after, those same fingers that once lingered over his delicate neck, threatening to end him, now gently caressed the skin lightly like a feather.
With each passing moment, Mitsunari let his mind curiously wander onto the possibilities. He really didn't know Sakon. He only knew what the man wanted him to know. He had never even seen the man serious often.
Such novel behavior belonging to the man he trusted
"Sakon, tell me about that scar."
"I promised, remember?" And then into his ear, "I have to uphold my promises after all."
Always covering his bases.
Sakon was truly an enigma.
